How To Take Notes

Taking notes during class lectures is one of the keys to being successful in the class. Below you will find a few note taking tips:

  • Do not try to write every word down. Instead use abbreviations when possible. To insure you do not forget what your abbreviations mean try to go over your notes as soon as possible and rewrite them.
  • Utilize the outline that the professor uses. Many times when an instructor is lecturing he/she will write notes on the board in an outline format. Try to follow this format.
  • Take notes in the same notebook and date your notes. If you can try to have a separate notebook for each class.
  • Be ready to take notes when the professor begins lecturing.
  • If a professor lectures from a text book read the material before hand. This way you will be able to have a better understanding of the lecture and know how to organize your notes.
  • Sit in the front of the room. It is easier to see and hear the professor if you are sitting in the front. In addition, you will be less likely to get distracted.
