Attendance
F.A.Q.
What is
an ID card and what is its purpose?
Each student
receives a student ID card when he/she registers for school
during registration. This contains the student's ID number and
picture on the front and a barcode on the back. This card is
used for many items at the campus including the recording of
a student's attendance. To ensure your ID number on your card
is accurate review your card number. If your ID number is not
accurate go to Student Central to get a new
ID card with the correct ID number (you must take the ID card
with the incorrect ID number with you to Student Central).
It is the student's responsibility to carry their card with
them and have it accessible upon request from any office or
University Official at any time.
The student's
attendance is recorded by a swipe of their ID card in the attendance
scanner located in each classroom and each lab.
A student
must swipe their ID card for every class (lab and lecture) he/she
attends. The attendance scanner is on 10 minutes before the
hour until 10 minutes after the hour of each class for each
class hour.
How do
I know if my card is working in the attendance scanner?
Once the
ID card has been swiped through the scanner, the scanner will
beep or display 'accepted'. If one of these things do not occur,
please report this problem immediately to Student Central, so your ID card can be checked.
What happens
if I forget to use the attendance scanner or am late to class?
If you forget
to swipe your card for attendance you may fill out an attendance
revision sheet to have your attendance recorded for that class.
You will have to have your instructor sign the revision sheet
and return the sheet to Student Central. You may obtain
a revision sheet by printing the form from this site or stopping
by the attendance center and picking one up.
What do
I do if I lose my ID card?
If you lose
your ID card the Attendance Center can replace your card for
$10.00 with proof of your age and identity.
What if
my ID card is damaged?
If your
ID card is damaged you may take it to Student Central for inspection. A $10 replacement fee may be applied
if the damage is determined to be caused by the student's negligence.
What are
the policies regarding absenteeism?
Each student
is expected to attend every class meeting in which they are
registered. Attendance will be recorded during each class. Absenteeism
may result in a warning, suspension and/or dismissal. Attendance
violations may result in students being dismissed from the institute
or from individual courses. (Please review Attendance Policy)
How do
I contact the Attendance Center?
You may
contact the Attendance Center with any questions or comments
you may have by sending an email to attendance@mail.dal.devry.edu
or by calling 972-929-9333. For office hours and our 800 number
please view the Contact/Hours of Operation page.
Why should
I report my absence?
Notifying
the Attendance Center of any absence benefits both the student
and instructor. The appropriate faculty member receives written
notification regarding the student's absence and access to a
phone number and email if the student needs to be contacted.
Notification also keeps the Attendance Center current with a
student's circumstances and in many situations keeps the student
from being suspended or dismissed.
What is
DeVry's make-up policy?
Students
are responsible for all work missed during any absence and it
is their responsibility to contact the appropriate faculty member
concerning possible make-up work. It is at the professor's discretion
as to allow or disallow any make-up work. Refer to the course
syllabus for the instructor's policy on make-up work.
What should
I do if I am late to class?
If you are
late to class and you are unable to swipe your card you may
fill out an attendance revision sheet to have your attendance
recorded for that class. You will have to have your instructor
sign the revision sheet and return the sheet to the attendance
center. You may obtain a revision sheet by printing the form
from this site or stopping by Student Central and picking
one up.
What is
a suspension?
Suspension
occurs when a student violates the attendance policy. The student
will then be subject to a warning, suspension or dismissal.
A warning
is defined as a notification to a student that they have violated
the attendance policy. The only students the Attendance center
will be giving a warning of attendance violation to is the accelerated
students.
A suspension
is the period of time from notification of attendance violation
to the deadline date of appealing said violation.
A dismissal
occurs when the student does not attempt, complete, or is denied
during the appeal time frame.
How do
I appeal an attendance suspension?
A student
has the right to appeal to the appropriate Academic Administrator
after notification of an impending attendance suspension/dismissal.
If you wish to appeal an attendance suspension or dismissal,
appeal forms are available in Student Central.
An attendance
suspension appeal must be picked up and completed before the
deadline date. The deadline date can be found on the notice
of suspension or by emailing or calling the Attendance Center
staff. If you fail to appeal a suspension appeal, dismissal
will take place. Denied suspension appeals, will result in dismissal.
While the appeal is being processed, you may attend classes
and take examinations.
An attendance
dismissal appeal must be picked up, completed, and approved
before reinstatement of enrollment can occur. While the appeal
is being processed, you may attend classes and take examinations.
No grades are recorded until the student is reinstated.
Both appeals
must include documentation of a valid reason for the absence.
Examples are a doctors report of serious illness, death
in the family, or other pertinent information. If the resulting
decision of the appeal is denial, a student may make a written
appeal to the Dean of Academic Affairs.
What if
I am absent from a accelerated/weekend class?
Students
that are enrolled in courses that are offered in accelerated
or compressed formats are expected to be in attendance each
time the course is scheduled. Because these courses meet for
fewer hours and class sessions, attendance is imperative to
maintain good academic standards. Students who miss 2 or more
consecutive classes in an 8 day calendar period, may be suspended.
Any student not returning to attend the next term's session,
must report their intentions to the Academics Office in writing.
Session is defined as session A or Session B of the new term.
